Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 large Baguette-style loaf Cut into two 6-inch portions
  • 6 oz Smoked ham Thinly sliced (approx. 170g)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Thinly sliced for melting
  • 8 slices Crinkle-cut pickles Dill variety preferred
  • 2 tbsp Yellow mustard (30ml)
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise (30ml)
  • 4 tbsp Salted butter (60g), softened
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder (5ml) or 2 cloves fresh minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp Dried parsley flakes (15ml)

Equipment

  • 1 Skillet or Panini Press A heavy cast-iron skillet works best for pressing.
  • 1 Small mixing bowl For the garlic butter.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley flakes until well combined.
  2. Slice the baguette sections in half lengthwise. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom halves and yellow mustard on the top halves.
Assembly & Cooking
  1. Divide the smoked ham, Swiss cheese, and crinkle-cut pickles between the sandwiches. Close the sandwiches firmly.
  2. Generously slather the outside of the bread (top and bottom) with the prepared garlic butter.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and press down with a heavy spatula or lid. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden-brown and the cheese is fully melted.

Notes

Pressing the sandwich is key to getting that dense, authentic Cuban texture.
Use a serrated knife to slice the baguette to avoid crushing the bread.
