Authentic Greek Salad (Traditional Horiatiki Recipe)

Ingredients
  

Salad Components
  • 3 large vine-ripened tomatoes cut into irregular chunks
  • 1 large English cucumber unpeeled, sliced into thick half-moons
  • 1/2 small red onion thinly sliced into translucent moons
  • 1/2 cup (75g) Kalamata olives whole
  • 7 oz (200g) Feta cheese one solid rectangular block
  • 1 tsp (2g) dried oregano preferably Greek
  • 3-4 tbsp (45-60ml) extra virgin olive oil high quality
  • 1 pinch sea salt to taste

  • 1 Shallow ceramic bowl Rustic style preferred
  • 1 Sharp Chef's Knife

Method
 

Assemble the Salad
  1. Place the chunked tomatoes and thick-sliced unpeeled cucumbers into a shallow bowl.
  2. Scatter the thin red onion moons and whole Kalamata olives over the vegetable base.
  3. Place the solid block of feta cheese prominently in the center of the salad.
  4. Drizzle the entire salad with extra virgin olive oil and generously dust the feta with dried oregano and a pinch of salt.

Notes

Always use room temperature tomatoes for the best flavor profile.
Serve with crusty bread to soak up the juices at the bottom of the bowl.
